World headed towards "suicide" if no climate agreement - pope
- Pope returns to Rome after African trip
- Holds trademark airborne news conference
- Speaks of climate change, Africa, development
- Says Paris summit is the last chance to thwart disaster
ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE, Nov 30 The U.N. climate conference in Paris is most likely humanity's last chance to thwart global environmental disaster, Pope Francis said on Monday, warning the world was "at the limits of suicide".
The pope, who wrote a major document on the environment last June, made the comment in an hour-long news conference aboard the plane returning him to Rome at the end of a six-day trip to Africa.
The freewheeling conversations have become a trademark of his papacy and the few times he takes direct questions from journalists.
Francis, who visited Kenya, Uganda and the Central African Republic, also said the continent was "a martyr of exploitation" by wealthy countries who lust after its natural resources and try to impose Western values instead of concentrating on development.
The pope was asked if the U.N. climate summit in Paris would mark a turnaround in the fight against global warming.
"I am not sure, but I can say to you 'now or never'," he said. "Every year the problems are getting worse. We are at the limits. If I may use a strong word I would say that we are at the limits of suicide."

World leaders open Paris climate change talks
Some 150 world leaders from U.S. President Barack Obama to Prime Minister Enele Sosene Sopoaga of Tuvalu gathered in Paris on Monday to open a summit meant to secure the world's most ambitious pact on climate change.
Here are some of the key things we've heard so far:
U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA:
"As the leader of the world's largest economy and the second largest (greenhouse gas) emitter ... the United States of America not only recognises our role in creating this problem, we embrace our responsibility to do something about it."
CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING:
Xi said it was crucial the climate talks addressed economic differences between nations and allowed different countries to develop their own solutions to the problem of global warming.
"It is important to respect the differences among countries, especially developing countries," he said.
ECUADOR'S PRESIDENT RAFAEL CORREA:
"An environmental debt needs to be paid." An international court for environmental justice should be set up.
"It is not understandable that we have courts to force countries to pay financial debts but we do not have a court to enforce environmental debts."
PRINCE CHARLES OF BRITAIN:
"If the planet were a patient, we would have treated her long ago. You,ladies and gentlemen, have the power to put her on life support, and you must surely start the emergency procedures without further procrastination."
"Humanity faces many threats but none is greater than climate change.” he said. "In damaging our climate we are becoming the architects of our own destruction. We have the knowledge, the tools and the money (to solve the crisis)."
GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL:
The aim of the summit was "a binding U.N. framework" and a binding review mechanism to close the gap between the impact on global warming of promised measures and the work required to limit rising temperatures, she said.
U.N. SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI-MOON:
"I urge you to instruct your negotiators to choose the path of compromise and consensus. Bold climate action is in the national interest of every single country represented at this conference. The time for brinkmanship is over."
RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN:
"We (Russia) have significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time we have managed to double our GDP. We have demonstrated that we can ensure economic development and take care of our environment at the same time."
ROBERT MUGABE, PRESIDENT OF ZIMBABWE:
"Developed countries are being miserly...they burden us for cleaning up the mess they have created."

Obama met with Putin, plans to meet with Turkey's president at summit
U.S. President Barack Obama met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday and plans to meet with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday at the climate summit in Paris, White House deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said.
Ankara and Moscow remain locked in a dispute over Turkey's downing of a Russian jet at its border with Syria last week.
On the sidelines of the climate discussions, Obama expressed to Putin his regret over the death of the Russian pilot, Rhodes said, while emphasizing de-escalation with Turkey.
The plane downing triggered Moscow's deployment of an advanced missile system to Syria. -

France and India look to the sun to save the planet
France and India on Monday launched an international alliance seeking to mobilise more than a trillion dollars by 2030 and deliver clean, solar energy to some of the planet's poorest.
French President Francois Hollande, host of two weeks of U.N. talks, needs to win the support of nearly 200 nations if the summit is to forge a global deal to curb climate change.
In the past, India has been one of the obstacles to consensus as it pushes for leeway to allow its population of more than a billion to develop.
