WASHINGTON - The Republican chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who will play a central role in determining the congressional response to the Iran nuclear deal, said on Tuesday he begins "from a place of deep skepticism" as he considers the agreement.
Senator Bob Corker had tough words for Iran in a statement, saying it continues as the world's "lead sponsor of terrorism" and that relieving sanctions would leave it "flush with cash" and increase threats to the United States and its allies. -
WASHINGTON - The Republican chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee criticized the nuclear agreement reached with Iran on Tuesday, saying it does not require Tehran to dismantle bombmaking technology and will allow it to develop an industrialized nuclear program in 10 years.
"The deal they have struck is looking like a tough sell," U.S. Representative Ed Royce, who will convene a hearing on the deal Tuesday morning, said in a statement. -

PARIS, July 14 (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande said on Tuesday major powers had to be vigilant about how Iran used any financial resources it gained from sanctions relief after a nuclear deal and urged Tehran to help find a solution to the Syrian crisis.
"Now that Iran has a greater financial capacity, we need to be extremely vigilant on what Iran will be," Hollande said. "Iran must show that it is ready to help us end the conflict," he added.
Iran has been a key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. -
DUBAI - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday a nuclear deal with major powers would open a new chapter of cooperation with the outside world after years of sanctions, predicting the "win-win" result would gradually eliminate mutual mistrust.
He added in a live televised speech that Iran would abide by its commitments under the agreement as long as world powers did, and asserted the accord protected gains made by Tehran in a nuclear programme the West suspects is intended to develop an atomic weapon. Iran says the work is purely peaceful.
Rouhani also urged neighbouring countries to ignore what he called propaganda by its arch foe Israel, saying Iran had a shared interest in the stability of the region.

VIENNA - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said he does not expect the U.S. Congress to definitively reject the nuclear deal reached by Iran and six major powers on Tuesday.
Asked what was the White House's plan if Congress rejected the deal with a veto-proof majority, Kerry told reporters: "I really don’t believe that people will turn their backs on an agreement which has such extraordinary steps in it with respect to Iran’s program as well as access and verification." -
WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) - Republican U.S. presidential candidate Lindsey Graham on Tuesday said the nuclear agreement reached with Iran is "a possible death sentence for Israel" and will "make everything worse."
In an interview on MSNBC, the U.S. senator called the deal "terrible."
"This is most dangerous, irresponsible step I've ever seen in the history of watching the Mideast," he said. "Barack Obama and John Kerry have been dangerously naive about the Mideast in general. They've taken it to a new level and any senator who votes for this is voting for a nuclear arms race in the Mideast, voting to give the largest state sponsor of terrorism $18 billion." -
WASHINGTON - U.S. national security adviser Susan Rice says the nuclear deal reached with Iran will prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and not let up pressure for its support of terrorism and "other destabilizing activities."
"This is a very good deal. It cuts off all of Iran’s pathways to a nuke and ensures the necessary inspections & transparency," Rice said on Twitter.

Saudi official says - The deal will be bad if reduction of sanctions lets Iran 'wreak havoc in region'.
-
Already, many Republicans and some Democrats have attacked the agreement, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner, as a misguided diplomatic move. However, the administration remains confident that the deal will not be permanently blocked because, under the terms of congressional oversight of the deal, it will require a two thirds majority of the House and Senate to override a presidential veto. - Andrew Hammond, Reuters columnist and associate at LSE IDEAS.
