- Portugal's Nani out of World Cup
- JOHANNESBURG, June 8 (Reuters) - Portugal winger Nani was
ruled out of the World Cup on Tuesday with a left shoulder
injury, the federation said in a statement.
"After tests we conclude he is unfit to participate in the
World Cup," it said. Nani picked up the injury in training on
Friday in Lisbon before flying to South Africa. - Portugal's Nani is out of the World Cup - reutersby kevinfreuters via twitter 6/8/2010 12:30:58 PM
- That is a huge blow for Portugal. Nani has been in excellent form of late. The pressure really is on Cristiano Ronaldo now

- @ReutersSport True. And with the group Portugal is in...the pressure's really on Cristiano Ronaldo.
- Absolutely. And the thing is, he had said on the flight over that he didn't think his World Cup was in danger. Bad, bad news.

- So, the course of the World Cup strikes again, and this time it's Portugal's Nani forced to miss the tournament in South Africa.
"After tests we conclude he is unfit to participate in the World Cup," Portugal's FA said in a statement that will make painful reading for the country's fans.
Nani suffered the injury in training on Friday in Lisbon before flying out with the team to South Africa. He enjoys a long list of absentees (see here for a previous blog from Mark Meadows)
As my colleague Shrikesh Laxmidas describes it, he fell while attempting an acrobatic shot and hurt his shoulder in the process.
Nani was quiet in the first half of the season for Manchester United but finished very strongly and this injury puts a lot more pressure on Cristiano Ronaldo to lead the time in South Africa, where they face Ivory Coast, Brazil and North Korea in Group G. - @ReutersSport Attempting an acrobatic shot? Even as a Manchester United supporter myself, Nani should save that for the actual tournament itself.
- Nani is not the only story in town, of course. Here are a few of may favourites from today...
- Here is Karolos Grohmann on the mood in South Africa as the kick-off approaches ... football.uk.reuters.com
- And here is excellent news for fans of the United States ... football.uk.reuters.com
- @diana Yes, I expects he feels the same way now!

- We should do a story about the great goalkeepers here at some stage. Here's one in France's Hugo Lloris, taken by Charles Platiau at a news conference in Cape Town today.

- Here's my favourite frame of the day -- a general view of Green Point stadium in Cape Town, taken by Oleg Popov.
- Italy landing in Joburg tomorrow. . .
- And the Slovaks get into town and start training
- William Gallas is refusing to speak to the press for the entire World Cup. . . The French media have suggested Gallas was upset about the fact that the new team captain was fellow defender Patrice Evra, and not himself.
- Another theme at this World Cup is the forgotten men ... Think of people like Kaka, who has been overshadowed rather by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, and how about Juan Sebsatian Veron? Click here for a nice story on him ... in.reuters.com

U.N. says Syria encouraged by Russia, China veto
AMMAN/UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. human rights chief accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of launching an "indiscriminate attack" on civilians to end pro-democracy protests and said he had been emboldened by the failure of the Security Council to condemn him. | Video
