One of the dignitaries joining Reuters columnist Chrystia Freeland today is Gary Doer, the Canadian ambassador to the United States. Among other things, Doer was named in 2005 as one of the top international leaders on fighting climate change. You can see the list here: www.businessweek.com -
The European Central Bank has increased its capital as a way of bolstering European economies. But will another five billion euros really do the trick? www.reuters.com -
One of the major issues is whether the country-by-country approach favored by many of Europe's larger economies is adequate to the debt problems at hand. DSK and EU president Barroso have advocated for a more structural approach, but the mechanisms for creating that are far from clear. www.reuters.com -
Among the other attractions this afternoon, Reuters blogger Felix Salmon will be commenting on the interview with DSK. If you don't already read Felix, you should: blogs.reuters.com -
I have a sense, both from the room here and from the general zeitgeist, that we will be getting some free-market critique of the IMF today. I wonder, though, if those who believe that the IMF should not exist at all are genuinely prepared to deal with multiple failures of sovereign nations. -

Some background on Irish bailout: www.reuters.com -

-
Not everyone, including Nobel-winning economist Paul Krugman, agrees that the Irish bailout will work: krugman.blogs.nytimes.com -
I'm not sure I understand this. Is DSK saying that if the bondholders of Ireland's banks take any kind of haircut, the consequent contagion *outside* Ireland would be devastating to Europe? Doesn't that just prove that Europe is far too fragile to exist over the long term? -
