if 2/3 of voters made up their minds based on debates, I again wonder if Santorum will exceed expectations tonight #fitsby samyoungman via twitter 1/21/2012 10:36:37 PM -
Just a week ago, a Romney win in South Carolina seemed far likelier than any alternative. But a new poll out today shows Romney trailing Gingrich, who finished fourth in both Iowa and New Hampshire, 26 percent to 40 percent. -

-
If Gingrich wins in South Carolina, Chuck Todd points out, it will be the first time Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina will have been won by three different candidates. -

-
A senior Romney aide tells McKay Coppins of Buzzfeed that he expects a Gingrich win in South Carolina. "I think we're going to lose tonight, we could lose big," he told Coppins. But a loss to Gingrich could be good for Romney's campaign, the aide argued: “When we go up against Newt, it helps us in the general election,” he said. “It’s not an ideological thing as much as judgment---the total gestalt of it.”
Republican strategist Ron Christie seemed to agree. "[T]his sparring will serve him well for the general election should he become the Republican nominee," Christie said. -

Regarding the impact of Romney's tough South Carolina run-up on his campaign, over the past few days on Intrade he's fallen from a 92% likelihood of winning the GOP nomination to 66% currently, down 7.7% today (usual Intrade caveats apply). -
Reuters' Steve Holland writes about how a showdown between Romney and Gingrich at Tommy's Country Ham House, where both had said they would hold campaign events at the same this morning, was only narrowly averted:
Romney arrived 45 minutes earlier than scheduled at the Greenville restaurant and avoided a face-to-face Election Day encounter with Gingrich, whose bus rolled up to the eatery just after Romney's left.
"I have a question. Where's Mitt?" Gingrich said of the former Massachusetts governor, telling the crowd, "I don't think they have New England clam chowder on the menu."
A Gingrich aide declared of Romney's early arrival: "They blinked."
But a Romney aide said Romney's previous event ended sooner than expected and he wanted to go early to Tommy's Country Ham House, a popular destination for political candidates who can talk up voters over breakfasts of ham, eggs, grits and the like.
"We see Newt all the time. We don't get to see the voters of South Carolina every day," the aide said. -

You veteran live blog watchers likely know the drill already, but for the uninitiated/forgetful, reserve a browser tab for Google's automatically-updating South Carolina results map. -
Also check out this FiveThirtyEight post with maps showing how the candidates did in 2008 in South Carolina. And if you'd like to dilute the suspense in some barbecue sauce, this is a great Capital New York piece showing how the 2008 results seem to match up with South Carolina's unique barbecue recipe regions (summary: McCain = mustard, Huckabee = tomato). -

CBS News says they asked South Carolina voters today what quality they think is most important in a candidate. Forty-five percent said it was the ability to beat President Obama. But 64 percent also said that recent debates -- in which Gingrich was seen to have outperformed Romney -- were an important factor in their vote. -
Anecdotal accounts of voter turnout so far.
Sounds a bit like a weather report. www.scvotes.org -

If Gingrich wins, will Romney still be seen as the inevitable nominee? Probably, according to one GOP strategist: "Regardless of what happens in South Carolina, this is still Mitt Romney's race to lose, and I don't think he's going to lose it," says Todd Harris. -
