Democratic Senator Richard Durbin, author of the “Dream Act,” tells Reuters' Donna Smith:
"This president has stepped up, as we have been asking, and established a standard of justice for these young people. I think it will be an important part of our history."
He says there is still a need for Congress to pass a permanent law. -
Senator Charles Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, questioned whether President Obama has the legal authority to stop deportations for young illegal immigrants and allow them to obtain work permits, Donna Smith reports:
“The President once denied that he had the legal authority to do this, and Congress was assured more than once that the administration would consider individuals for this sort of deferred status on a case-by-case basis only, and that there was no plan to implement a broad-based program. It seems the President has put election-year politics above responsible policies,” Grassley said in a statement. -
