Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina elected pope
VATICAN CITY, March 13 (Reuters) - Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected pope on Wednesday to lead the Roman Catholic Church, a prelate announced to huge crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square.
He took the name Pope Francis, the cardinal said.
Cardinals elected Bergoglio on just the second day of a secret conclave to find a successor to Pope Benedict, who abdicated unexpectedly last month.

"I don't really know him," said Geir Skutlaberg, 29, Norway, Bergen, student, as people in the crowd asked each other who the new pope was and where was he from. The reaction to the name was confusion.
"It's just an awesome event, an amazing feeling, it's mostly because of the crowd and focusing on one person."

Fr. James Bretzke, professor of moral theology at Boston College, and a fellow jesuit priest:“He was reputedly the runner-up in the last papal conclave in 2005.”
“He has a reputation of being rather inflexible and staunchly conservative, but he has been elected as the Pope, he has taken the name of Francis which is identified with peace…I hope that he will as Benedict did try to minister over all the church and be led by the Holy Spirit.
“I would not say very different (from Benedict.) Certainly not more liberal. So he’s not going to be a big liberal, there will not be big changes in church teaching, probably in church outreach … I think he will be careful and conservative and we hope for the best.”

Striking that the new pope has chosen the name "Francis." This is a little like old-style Kremlinology, but these choices are made with the purpose of sending a message. No pope has been named Francis, and choosing this name can indicate not only a concern with serving the poor (and indeed embracing poverty or asceticism or simplicity, which this pope, as cardinal reputedly did) but also recall: Francis sought a reformation and rebuilding of the church, seeking to act in the world rather than withdraw from it. The implication to me from the choice of a new name, and the name chosen, is that a change is in store.”
