Our latest update from the team at the Vatican is in:
Black smoke as morning fails to bring new popeVATICAN CITY - Cardinals in secret conclave failed twice on Wednesday morning to elect a new pope, as black smoke over the Sistine Chapel showed ballots on the first full day of voting were inconclusive.
After an inconclusive first vote on Tuesday night, the 115 cardinal electors should hold another two ballots later on Wednesday after praying for inspiration from God for a choice that can lead the Roman Catholic Church out of crisis.
Having spent the night closeted in a nearby guesthouse, the cardinals attended Mass in the Pauline Chapel in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace and returned to the Renaissance splendor of the Sistine Chapel to hold the two morning ballots.

Voices from St Peter's Square
Claudio Salvati, 61, consultant from Rome, disappointed because he arrived in St Peter's square and just missed the smoke.
"I want a truly religious man as the next pope, not someone who is interested in business or power, just pure spirituality."
"I like Tagle- I don't know why, it's just the feeling I get when I look at him."
"I think they are having problems selecting a new pope. I reckon they started off with Scola but they are going to have to settle on an outsider. It needs time, I think maybe tomorrow they will come to a decision."

Little risk of U.S. pope 'taking orders' from White House
WASHINGTON, March 13 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said concerns that an American pope would be too closely tied to the U.S. government are misplaced, pointing out in an interview that the White House and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops are divided on some main issues.
There are two American cardinals among the dozen most frequently mentioned frontrunners in the conclave to elect the next Roman Catholic pope - Sean O'Malley of Boston and Timothy Dolan of New York - but conclaves have long been wary of picking a "superpower pope" from the United States.
"It seems to me that an American pope would preside just as effectively as a Polish pope or an Italian pope or a Guatemalan pope," Obama said in an ABC television interview that aired on Wednesday.

The U.S. President Barack Obama has said he would not advise an American pope were one to be elected. But could any influence work the other way? An American pope could exert his influence in the 2016 election there, which is likely to feature issues that are key to the Catholic Church.
Catholic leaders in the United States are already prominent voices on issues like legislating for abortion, stem cell research or euthanasia. In 2007 Cardinal Sean O'Malley, named as a possible papal contender, said that Catholics voting for members of the Democratic Party who support laws contrary to Catholic teaching "borders on scandal". -

New pope's choice of name will carry his first message
by Religion Editor Tom Heneghan
Even before he utters his first words in public, the new pope who emerges from the conclave this week will send Roman Catholics around the world a message encoded in the name he chooses.
It may not be one they immediately understand. Picking an unlikely one from the distant papal past - for example, Hilarus or Zephyrinus - would send Catholics scurrying to their history books to see what it could mean.
But one harking back to modern popes - Benedict or John Paul or John - would signal right away the new leader of 1.2 billion faithful wants continuity with the papacy his name refers to.
One name making the rounds in Rome before the 115 cardinal electors filed into the Sistine Chapel for their conclave on Tuesday was Francis, a name Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley might take if he emerges as the new pontiff.
O'Malley is a Franciscan friar who prefers the brown habit and white rope belt of his Capuchin order to his red cardinal's finery. No pope has ever taken the name of Saint Francis of Assisi, the 13th century reformer who lived in poverty and told followers: "Preach the Gospel always, if necessary use words."
