U.S. authorities are monitoring investigations overseas of alleged plots by Islamic State operatives or sympathizers to launch attacks over the New Year's holiday period, U.S. officials said on Wednesday.Officials at the Department of Homeland Security and other U.S. agencies, however, said they were unaware of any imminent or credible threats by Islamic State or other militants to attack inside the United State or hit American targets overseas.In New York City, traditionally the site of the nation's largest New Year's Eve celebration, police have seen no credible threat at this time, a New York police spokesman said. Belgian police have detained six people during house searches in Brussels in an investigation into a plot to carry out an attack in the city on New Year's Eve, prosecutors said on Thursday.Authorities in the Belgian capital Brussels on Wednesday called off the city's traditional New Year's Eve fireworks display, citing fears of an attack.A judge would decide later on Thursday whether they could be held further.Two people arrested earlier this week, named as 30-year-old Said S. and 27-year-old Mohammed K., would be held for one more month as they were charged with threatening to carry out a terrorist attack, prosecutors said.

Hotels and restaurants in Paris are still suffering in the wake of last month's Islamist militant attacks with bookings for New Year celebrations down 30-40 percent, a hotel federation said.The French capital has been on high alert since Islamic State militants killed 130 people in shootings and suicide bombings on Nov. 13."Bookings for the year-end weekend are down 30-40 percent," Evelyne Maes, head of the UMIH-Paris-Ile de France hotel federation, told Reuters. Authorities have told Italians to snuff out their ardor for New Year's Eve fireworks in a bid to limit air pollution that has caused traffic bans or restrictions in several cities.Rockets, firecrackers and flares are banned from public spaces in Milan, Bologna and Turin after a nationwide build-up of micro particles in the atmosphere during an unusually dry winter.The mayor of Reggio Calabria in Italy's southwestern toe extended a ban on pyrotechnics until Jan. 7, saying they were not only pollutants but could injure humans and distress animals.
