French troops enter Mali's Diabaly as Islamists vanish
NIONO, Mali, Jan 21 (Reuters) - A column of French and Malian armoured personel carriers and supply trucks moved north into the central Malian town of Diabaly early on Monday after the Islamist rebels who were controlling it melted away, security sources said.
Diabaly, 350 km (220 miles) north of the capital Bamako, had harboured the main cluster of rebels south of the front-line towns of Mopti and Sevare until French airstrikes forced them to flee or attempt to blend in with locals, residents said.
"French and Malian forces have advanced to Diabaly and they will continue their mission of securing the town," the deputy commander of Malian forces in nearby Niono, who gave his name only as Captain Samasa, told Reuters. Another security source confirmed the information on condition of anonymity.

Two dead siege militants were Canadians-Algerian source
ALGIERS, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Two dead Islamist militants found inside the Algerian desert siege site were Canadians, an Algerian security source told Reuters on Monday.
Algerian special forces had discovered the bodies at the Tiguentourine gas plant near the town of In Amenas, the source said.
Troops stormed the plant on Saturday, ending a hostage crisis which began when Islamists took control of the site before dawn on Wednesday. Many hostages, including American, British, French, Japanese, Norwegian and Romanian citizens, are among those missing or confirmed dead.
An official Algerian source said previously that the group behind the attack had comprised Arabs, Africans, and also people from outside the African continent. (reporting by Lamine Chikhi; editing by David Stamp) -
Nine Japanese killed in Algerian hostage crisis-govt source
TOKYO, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Nine Japanese nationals were killed during a four-day siege at a gas plant in Algeria, where the number of hostages killed had already reached at least 48, a Japanese government source said on Monday.
"We've received information from the Algerian government that nine Japanese are dead," the official, who declined to be identified pending the official announcement, told Reuters.
The Japanese government and engineering firm JGC Corp , which had several dozen employees working at the plant, have so far said only that 10 Japanese workers remained unaccounted for. Neither would confirm media reports of casualties.
JGC is due to give an update regarding its staff in Algeria at 0600 GMT.
The deadly siege, one of the worst international hostage crises in decades, was claimed by a veteran Islamist fighter on behalf of al Qaeda. -
Death toll of hostages in Algeria crisis reaches 48 -source
ALGIERS, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Algerian troops searching a desert gas compound a day after ending a four-day siege found the bodies of 25 more hostages inside, more than doubling the toll to 48 hostages killed, a security source said on Sunday.
Along with 32 slain hostage-takers, the overall death toll from the incident reached 80. The source said the toll could still rise as troops continue to comb through the site.

French target Islamist posts in Gao, Timbuktu strikes: minister
PARIS, Jan 20 (Reuters) - French forces have launched air strikes in the Mali regions of Timbuktu and Gao in recent days and will continue to do so as they target command posts of Islamist militants, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Sunday.
"French forces, and notably air forces, are striking terrorist strongholds, that's the case in the region of Gao, it's the case in the Timbuktu region. It will continue," the minister said in a TV interview.
He also said ground troops had not yet taken another town, Diabaly, but that he expected positive news on that front "in the coming hours".
