Julia Bolanos,44, was dragging back home sheets of corrugated iron that was her roof until "You have to grab it because if not someone else will, or the wind will take it away," she said. Bolanos spent the storm at her daughter's sturdier home and would stay there until her own hd been rebuilt. "I took everything with me because i knew this would happen. But the state always helps those who have damaged homes. I just dont know how long it will take as There is a lot of damage around here."(Reporting by Sarah Marsh)

Fresh green seaweed carpeted the streets closest to the sea in Caibarien. "We had half a meter of muddy water in here. The water drained away but we had to sweep out the mud," said Angel Coya, 52, throwing clumps of seaweed into mounds by the street for authorities to clear later on.He and his family sheltered in the second storey of the building opposite during the storm. "Sheets of zinc that came flyig into our backyard also damaged the kitchen wall and we lost many roof tiles."(Reporting by Sarah Marsh)

"It was powerful, water rose to about one meter high," said Risle Echemendia, 28, in Caibarien as he swept muddy water out of his front door. "This was the strongest storm Caibarien ever had. It will take a while to recover from this, at least a few years."(Reporting by Frank Jack Daniel)

Tom Durr is a 66-year-old retired physician who along with his wife, Lorraine, fled their house on a waterway near a large bay on the Gulf Coast on Tuesday for a small farm they own in North Carolina. He does not expect much to be left when he returns.
“It will be a nice waterfront lot in sunny Florida with no house, no trees, no cars, no boats and an amazing view of devastation as far as you can see.”
The Durrs’ house is in Englewood, Florida between Fort Myers and Sarasota near where the eye of Hurricane Irma is forecast to hit land early Sunday morning.“Just look at the social media that came out of the Caribbean islands, what could get out, where the eye passed through a few days ago. I don’t have much hope, not when you’ve got umpteen models all converging on us. You feel little bit in the crosshairs.”Durr tied down his two boats with “hurricane hold-downs” and left them in the yard, but he said that winds as strong as Irma is expected to generate will easily overcome those straps and his boats will be tossed a long distance.“We did everything that you could realistically do with an old house. But that’s all for naught in a storm this strong. It’s going to be leveled. Gone. And you’ll have 10 foot of water where your house once stood,” said Durr.Durr said the insurance on his house will not pay for what will be required if and when he wants to rebuild, if he does. He said a house with living quarters raised above worst-case scenario flood levels will be needed, and any insurance payouts he gets for his current house will not cover the costs of that. And it will be weeks, Durr predicts, before he is even able to see how the hurricane affected his house, because he expects roads to be impassable that long.(Reporting by Bernie Woodall) -
