James Murdoch at the Leveson Inquiry
-

-
Murdoch junior will be quizzed on his closeness to political figures, says Reuters correspondent Georgina Prodhan.
She writes: "James Murdoch, 39, will face questions about meetings with ministers while they considered letting the Murdochs take full control of broadcaster BSkyB and also about a Christmas drinks party he attended with Prime Minister David Cameron, who may also soon face awkward questions from an inquiry he himself set up in response to public outrage at tabloid misbehaviour.
The younger Murdoch, who stepped down this month as chairman of BSkyB, may be asked whether the family political influence his Australian-born father had built up over four decades may have contributed to a sense of invulnerability among the tabloid journalists accused of hacking voicemails to break stories."

Robert Jay, lead counsel, is doing the questioning. Here's a profile of Jay from yesterday's Guardian newspaper www.guardian.co.uk -

-
Jay asks Murdoch if he read the News of the World on a weekly basis. Murdoch says he didn't read all of it, but would "read it from time to time."
The lead counsel follows this up by asking James Murdoch if he saw any risk in the parts of the paper which featured salacious gossip, kiss and tells and diving into the private lives of celebrities. Murdoch says he remembers receiving assurances about ethics and good journalistic practice at the NoTW "on a number of occasions." -

Murdoch says executives at News International gave him assurances that there was no evidence of widespread phone hacking. He says: "Their assurances to me were consistent as I said, the newspaper had been investigated thoroughly that no evidence had been found." -
James Murdoch lapses into management speak at #leveson -- couldn't "situate" Taylor's payout with legal positionby paulsandle via twitter 4/24/2012 9:58:42 AM -
They're now discussing the payout made to football union boss Gordon Taylor. Murdoch says he was given legal advice to settle a hacking case with Taylor, and that there was not a "proactive desire" to bring him up to speed on the settlement.
Jay asks if Murdoch thought a 350,000 pound settlement was a generous sum. Murdoch says he is not a lawyer and does not have the experience to make that judgement. -

Asked if he knew that Myler thought Taylor was going to attempt to blackmail News International (by revealing that hacking was rife at the organisation), Murdoch says:
"If the purpose of that meeting was to bring me up to speed on the whole story, then a) it would have been a much longer meeting and b) it would have had a different outcome" -
