According to official results on the Interior Ministry's Web site, the centre left is leading by fewer than 200,000 votes with about 2,000 voting stations left to count. Projections given by television channels also said the centre left should barely win the lower house.
Whoever wins the lower house will automatically be awarded 340 of the 630 seats. The Senate result remains unclear, but projections show that no party or coalition probably won a majority of seats. -

"We are going to see a spike in the interest rates that will stay around during this period, and if there needs to be a subsequent election, these higher interest rates will stick around for a while until that election comes about," says Jeffrey Bergstrand, finance professor at University of Notre Dame. -

"Europe hasn't gone away as an issue, it is going to hang around, and it is rearing its ugly head today," said Stephen Massocca, managing director of Wedbush Morgan in San Francisco.
"If someone gets elected who is simply not going to play by the rules, what are they going to do? It puts them in a real quandary here because their financial support, their monetary support is all stipulated by the fact that these austerity programs are going to be in place." -

If we see a hung parliament, then the market would rather go risk off ... no-one really wanting to commit to buy periphery in the scenario where you don't know for weeks or maybe one or two months how the future in Italy is going to be," says Christian Lenk, a strategist at DZ Bank. -

Kevin Lilley, European equity fund manager at Old Mutual Asset Managers, said he had sold European bank stocks in the run-up to the Italian vote.
He added he could sell more equities if Berlusconi's centre-right party won the Senate, while he might buy back some of those bank stocks he had earlier sold if the centre-left came
out on top.
"It will be 'risk-off' if Berlusconi wins. Italian bond yields will go up in the short-term," he said. -

Oil gave back some gains as financial markets slipped after exit polls from Italy's national election fed fears of political stalemate in the euro zone's third largest economy.
"It seems like we've had an emotional turnaround. We started off on the bullish foot this morning with China and we also had optimism that the Italian election would have a happy outcome, but it doesn't look like we have a happy outcome. It looks like we have a confusing outcome," said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Price Futures Group in Chicago. -

The uncertainty around the Italian elections adds a level of instability and risk back into markets that had mostly been gone, according to Jens Nordvig, chief currency strategist at Nomura Securities in New York.
"Political risk in the euro zone should not be ignored," he wrote in a note. "Lack of reform momentum in Italy may over time impact the (European Central Bank's) ability to backstop its bond market, implicitly and explicitly." -

Italy's centre left to win lower house, Senate deadlocked
Italy's centre-left coalition will win a majority in the lower house of parliament but the upper house will be deadlocked, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday after almost all votes were counted.
After 99.9 percent of the polling booths had been tallied, the centre-left led the centre-right by about 125,000 votes in the lower house, handing it a sizeable majority thanks to a generous winner's bonus.
But the Senate was a different story. The centre left was sure to win more seats than the centre right in the upper house, but fell well short of a majority, even in coalition with outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti's help.
Since both houses are needed to pass laws, the centre left would need the help of comic Beppe Grillo's 5-Star Movement or Silvio Berlusconi's centre right to pass laws, currently an unlikely prospect. If no agreement can be reached, a new vote would have to be called. -
