Iowa Caucuses

Not everyone thinks the caucuses are important or meaningful. Gail Collins calls them "really ridiculous," CBS' Brian Montopoli says they're "overhyped" and "unrepresentative," and Matt Taibbi, writing on rollingstone.com, says they're the beginning of what, this year, "may be the most meaningless national election campaign we’ve ever had":
This caucus, let’s face it, marks the beginning of a long, rigidly-controlled, carefully choreographed process that is really designed to do two things: weed out dangerous minority opinions, and award power to the candidate who least offends the public while he goes about his primary job of energetically representing establishment interests.

Conservative blogger Erick Erickson gets dewy-eyed for Jon Huntsman Jr. in Iowa.
"Every time the subject come up with Iowans I encounter, not to mention other conservatives here for the Hawkeye Caucii, they lament what might have been Jon Huntsman," Erickson writes at Redstate.com. -
What will turnout be tonight?
Republican ad man Mike Murphy is predicting 126,000. It was 119,000 back in 2008, a record for a Republican caucus. But to put that number in context, 227,000 Iowans caucused for the Democrats in 2008. How big a bump (or loss) we see in the the turnout number will be an early (and small) indication of just how juiced Republican voters are about removing Barack Obama from office. -

There's one clear victor in the caucuses already: Pizza Ranch. It seems to be referenced in every fourth story about about the Iowa race.
Visiting political reporters are even writing stories about it, amazed at the salad bar replete with "ham chunks and five kinds of mayonnaise-based salads." -

As Iowa voters come off the sidelines and campaign volunteers hope their candidate can quarterback their team to victory, Reuters columnist Jack Shafer has a piece out Tuesday comparing the fates and methods of sports reporters and political reporters.
Compare, for example, the San Diego Union-Tribune‘s five things to watch in last year’s Super Bowl with Politico’s five things to watch in Iowa from today. Guess which list instructs its readers to watch for “game changers” and “center of attention,” which insists that “not all ground games are equal,” or which talks about what will happen “if the weather is bad”?

I'm very skeptical about the predictive value of Intrade, "the world's leading prediction market." But for what it's worth, it currently shows Romney as a comfortable favorite, although with less than a 50% chance: www.intrade.com -

Note to New Hampshire-bound campaign staff, it is cold enough in NH now to make a Mormon presidential candidate curse out loud.
In Des Moines it's a balmy 36 F while in LIttleton NH, where Newt Gingrich will bravely campaign Thursday, it is currently 3 and heading for -6 degrees overnight. -
