The only woman author I can identify with well is Carol Shields. She got married stayed home had 5 kids and started writing once her youngest went to grade one.

Carol Shields (who loved Jane Austen, by the way) was a wonderful person. She was also an excellent writer. Stayed away from the wild side, though.

and before you quote Benazir Bhutto and Indira Gandhi, they had powerful fathers. Both succeeded their fathers into the PM's chair.

From what we read, in India and Pakistan women live without the most basic freedoms and often in fear of their lives. But Teenaz you would have a perspective on how the media impression differs from the reality.

At the women's hockey finals while women were receiving their medals, several of their kids were there too. This was not at the Men's game. Why so?

With the women, their success is tied to how they raise their kids, families, interaction with parents etc. With men it is not so.

the feminist movement as far as I think, only extended the shackles of women from the doorstep to the workplace. it did not break them.

I spent International Women's Day just outside Bangalore, India, with a Habitat Women's Build group. We were honored at a gathering of local women -- about 250 women of all ages who march down the street with signs and banners and floooded into the tent like a cascade of jewels. their saris and the colors were amazing. The main speaker was the district Chief of Police, who is -- amazingly -- a woman. The entire edition of the local newspaper was dedicated to Women's Day -- something I don't recall being more than mentioned in our press. Perhaps the reason is that, by comparison, women in the US seem to be in a much better place than the women of India. It was a great event and and a good day to remember that our sisters around the world work a lot harder at life than we have to.
