70th Annual Golden Globes

What the stars will (possibly) eat
It’s hard not to drool when flicking through the gallery of the preview menu for this weekend’s Golden Globes. Chilean Seabass, flat iron beef, smoked this, carmelised that, confit of something, all topped off with a trio of deliciously decadent desserts - because really, who serves just one dessert at a time, anymore?
You do have to wonder how much of it the stars will actually end up eating, of course, those body-con dresses are unforgiving, and will probably show up even the smallest serving of digested mashed sweet potato. And other questions - have the chefs carefully studied the trends this season to make sure that anything dropped will be precisely the right tone to either blend or complement the dress it’s dropped onto? Are the tables equipped with stain remover pens and dental floss? Have they ever considered neater, cleaner powdered astronaut food instead? Enquiring minds demand to know. -
Your invite is not in the mail. Sorry.
It is important to know which are the biggest and best parties - even if you're not invited to any of them. Luckily, the LA times, among others, has produced a handy list of the parties where all the beautiful people (but not you, most likely, although I'm sure your mother finds you the most beautiful person in the world) will be rubbing noses. Literally? Perhaps. We have no idea. Because, of course, we're not invited either.
But still. The parties are happening, and whatever happens there (or whatever leaks out), we'll hope to bring you all the news. If there is any. May not be any at all, of course. Because that's always the best thing to believe about parties you're not invited to - they're probably not that good anyway. (Or at least, that's what Ben Affleck would say). -
Countdown to the Globes
About fifteen hours to go and I - like so many people, I'm sure - am already sitting here in my ballgown in front of the TV, waiting for the red carpet coverage to begin, and planning our gourmet menu for the ceremony banquet (pretzels for starters, chips and salsa for the entree, and a banana for dessert - it's a long show, we'll need the energy). Meanwhile, there's nothing to do but consume blogposts predicting tonight's winners.
- Could it be, asks moviefone.com, that the Globes have better taste in movies than the Oscars this year?
- Will Ben Affleck or Kathryn Bigelow get a Best Director award to make up for being snubbed by the Academy Award Voters? And other questions, posed by the International Business Times…
- MTV lays out their predictions for Best Actor and Best Actress in all the various categories - and, like everyone else, predicts Daniel Day Lewis for a top gong. Frankly I don't think anyone would be surprised at this point if he won ALL the Best Actor gongs - even the categories he's not nominated for - and the Best Actress ones as well, so clean a sweep is expected by Lincoln this evening.
- "Who will win Best Film?" asks Hitfix.com… No prizes for guessing their prediction.
And now to sit and wait. Perhaps the ballgown is a bad idea. Perhaps a large top hat and neatly trimmed chin-beard would be more in order… -

Quick! Be witty! And also humble! NOW!
Not wanting to pile pressure onto tonight's nominees, but E! Online has compiled the 15 Best Things Ever Said At The Golden Globes.
So, there are some helpful tips there (referencing Ricky Gervais seems to go down well, or being Ricky Gervais, in fact, as well as dropping age-inappropriate references, thank you Meryl Streep) as well as some things that only work in context, so should probably be avoided. Like suggesting Natalie Portman's husband wants to sleep with you. Only Natalie Portman can get away with that one, really… -
"It's a party, and that's it"
Still building the excitement in the hours before the stars start sauntering up the red carpet, an interesting New York Times piece about the changing reputation of the Globes, from 'a bit of a joke', through bumps and near-calamities, to its current high status as a more-relaxed version of the Oscars, a public party for Hollywood, and one of the major early must-watch events of the red carpet fashion season.
It also addresses the issue of whether the Hollywood Foreign Press association are right to include TV shows among the awards, or whether it cheapens what could otherwise be a major movie studio event. One hollywood producer, Matti Leshem, is quoted as saying: "“The Globes have exhibited some amount of prescience in conglomerating film and television. Today, when the small screen is a viable stage for the caliber of great performances once reserved for the big screen, it seems passé to ghettoize television performances.” Which is not only a convincing argument for their inclusion, it's also full of precisely the kind of long words that you'd come out with if you knew you were going to be quoted in the NYT.
Basically, the reputation of the Globes is safe for now - it's the kookier, off-kilter, clubbier and more casual version of the Oscars. As long as your definition of 'clubbier' and 'more casual' includes perfectly preened starlets in vintage Dior. And whose doesn't, right? -

And just like that, it's begun. The red carpet is quivering with joy as it feels the imprints of the first starry stilettos upon its brilliant back. Piya Sinha-Roy is our incredible woman on the scene, but other publications are also livetweeting the carpet - Marie Claire, blogging superstars Tom & Lorenzo and, as if it wasn't enough, twitter has rounded up its own collection of celebrity live-tweeters, and collected them all in one place. Yay social media! -

Meanwhile, on twitter, Tom & Lorenzo suggest the colours of the red carpet will be Silver and Red. I'm assuming they don't just mean the colour of the red carpet will be red. That much we knew. Still, I'm beginning to feel slightly foolish for leaving 'Red' out of the red carpet poll. If you want to vote Red, you can always choose 'puce'. We'll know what you meant. -

The presenters on the Red Carpet are talking repeatedly about how freezing cold it is on the Red Carpet, which is something to look out for when you're considering how comfortable Hollywood's A-list are looking in their strapless gowns.
Then again, 'freezing' is a relative concept. Glenn Close seems to be weathering the temperature drop quite comfortably in a small shrug over her dress, and everyone else seems fairly comfortable in considerably less. As someone sitting a few thousand miles away wearing a slanket, I could quite happily instruct the microphone-wavers of the Red Carpet on the meaning of 'freezing'.
Still: it's chilly in LA this afternoon - watch out, those earrings that you think are drop diamonds may actually be icicles. -

And remember, everyone, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler 'created a drinking game' for this event - as explained in this illustrated blog post from BuzzFeed. Of course, technically, that means "they just made up a few funny drinking game ideas on the spot in an interview with Hollywood Reporter", but still, it went viral, so there we have it: a drinking game. There are still more rules that can be added, of course. One drink for anyone who trips up (in sympathy), one for anyone who talks so long they get edged off the microphone… you know the drill. -
Jack Black, ladies and gentlemen, is walking the Red Carpet with his mother: always a heart-warming sight. Eyes are now peeled for any other nominees who have chosen to take an elderly relative to the awards ceremony. They're already winners to us (and to their moms, obviously). -

Do the outfits chosen for the red carpet give any clues to what Amy Poehler and Tina Fey might have in store for tonight? Will Poehler get gradually more feminine in dress style, perhaps swapping the pants for a tutu after the first few awards, and Fey go the other way, accessorizing her L'Wren Scott number with a perfectly waxed moustache? Who can say. Not us, clearly. We haven't got a clue.

Zooey Deschanel has just informed one of the Red Carpeteers that she is very cold. You'd never know to look at her though, looking comfortable as she clowns around with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, one of the other many, many funny women of the Globes this evening. Here they are, being funny.

One of the most notable things about the red carpet is the level of screaming in the background of every interview. It's very loud, and only seems to be getting more frantic and high-pitched every few minutes. We can feel assured that no great tragedy is occurring somewhere just off-camera - the brave microphone-wielding Red Carpeteers are focussed on their task in hand ("Who are you wearing?", "Who are YOU wearing?", "How did it feel playing one of the greatest presidents of all time? And more importantly, who are you wearing?"), they probably would have mentioned that.
Instead, it does tend to make you feel as if whoever you're watching being interviewed (and whoever they're wearing) there's someone far more famous and incredibly more interesting just out of shot. -
