The inquiry asks Cameron about the evidence given by Sir John Major earlier in the week. The former PM said Murdoch told him his newspapers would not support the then Tory government if it did not change its policy on Europe. Cameron says he has never had a conversation "of that nature." -

The inquiry hears how, during his time in opposition, Cameron met Rupert Murdoch 10 times, James Murdoch 15 times and Rebekah Brooks 19 times.
The inquiry then asks Cameron about about his Santorini visit with Matthew Freud, Rebekah Brooks and various Murdochs.
"My memory was that this was drinks, then a dinner... Rupert Murdoch was there, yes," he says. -

The PM says the Santorini trip was Matthew Freud's idea. Cameron adds that at the time he was due to go to Georgia, and going to the Greek island instead seemed like a good opportunity to get to know Rupert Murdoch better.
Cameron: "Obviously I was trying to win the support of his newspapers … It was a long way to go and all that, but it just seemed a good opportunity." -

Cameron is asked about his meeting with James Murdoch for a drink at The George in September 2009. This is when Cameron was told by Murdoch Jr that The Sun would support the Tories at the next election.
Cameron says: "He told me I think it was going to happen around the time of the Labour party conference. I was pleased obviously." -

Some key quotes from Cameron's evidence so far:
ON NEW LABOUR
I'm not trying to blame the whole thing on New Labour. I think that would be wrong. But I think it's been a developing story. You've got the Conservative government under John Major, who knew there was a problem ...
Then you had the arrival of New Labour and I think the combination of that with the 24-hour news agenda is what lies behind some of the problems.
ON PROPOSED BSKYB MERGER
The idea of overt deals is nonsense. I also don't believe in this theory that was sort of a nod and wink and some sort of covert agreement.
Of course I wanted to win over newspapers ... I worked very hard at that because I wanted to communicate what the Conservative Party and my leadership could bring to the country.
But I didn't do it on the basis of saying that either overtly or covertly your support will mean that I will give you a better time on this policy or that policy.
ON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLITICIANS AND THE PRESS
Part of my evidence ... is to say that I think this relationship has been going wrong for, you know, it's never been perfect. There have always been problems. You can point to examples of (former Prime Minister Winston) Churchill putting (press tycoon) Beaverbrook as a minister, so this is, there have been issues for years.
But I think (in) the last 20 years the relationship has not been right, I think it has been too close, as I explained in my evidence. And I think we need to try and get it on a better footing.
I don't think the regulatory system we have at the moment works, and so we need to improve it.
ON MEDIA SCRUTINY OF POLITICIANS
Sometimes it feels as if the volume button is being turned up unnecessarily.
ON PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JOURNALISTS
You have to take care but I think it can be done and I think that I've done that. -

Jay is giving Cameron quite the grilling about his friendships with Brooks, Freud and the like. The PM is asked whether he spoke to Brooks on a weekly basis between 2008, 2009.
"The level of contact went up and we saw each other socially more," he says, because this is when Brooks moved to Chipping Norton. -

Cameron explains email from Brooks: 'professionaly we are in this together' - he says reflects endorsement of Sun for Conservatives #Levesonby philbaillie via twitter 6/14/2012 11:10:43 AM -
Jay turns to text messages from Brooks. On the eve of Cameron's Tory conference speech in October 2009, Brooks wrote to Cameron: "But seriously I do understand the issue with the Times, let's discuss over country supper soon... I am so rooting for you, not just as a personal friend but because profesionally we are in this together. Speech of your life? Yes he Cam!" -

Cameron: "What I assessed was that this was clearly a controversial appointment, and controversial for two reasons. One was that bad things happened at the NoW while he was editor and he resigned. T

Asked why Coulson deserved a second chance, Cameron says, given the assurances and the fact that Coulson did the decent thing by quitting his job at the News of the World following a phone-hacking scandal, he felt he was the right man for the job.
Coulson's contacts and knowledge of industry were important, Cameron adds, but the most important thing was he would be good at the job. Cameron wasn't just after anyone from News International or the Mail, he wanted someone who could stand up to the press, this was his main concern, and this is why Coulson got the job. -
