He said that he sees three conditions which will help accomplish the summit's mission, which are around:1) Defining a credible path to containing global warming below 2C and providing regular assessments through a review mechanism.2) Bringing a united response to the climate challenge, with developed countries shouldering their historical responsibilities and emerging countries accelerating their energy transition.3) The third condition of an agreement in Paris is that our societies move into action. -
Key quotes from the opening session so far:
- French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, president of the meeting, urged delegates to work hard so that they could say “mission accomplished” by Dec. 11. “Success is not yet achieved, but it is within reach,” he told delegates.
- “We stand with Paris,” Christiana Figueres, the U.N.’s climate chief, told delegates, referring to the Islamic State attacks that killed 130 people.
- “In the face of adversity, in the face of threats of many kinds, Paris must be the place the world unites as one,” Figueres said. “This past year has been a turning point,” she said, saying
there was growing momentum for action to limit climate change. - She said there should be agreed milestones, predictable timelines aligned with science.

World needs to go "much faster, much further" to slow warming – U.N.'s Ban
U.N. Secretary General Bank Ki-moon called on world leaders at the start of two weeks of climate talks in Paris to accelerate action to avert a dangerous rise in temperatures.
National emissions pledges from more than 180 nations were, he said, a very good start, but were not enough to curb global warming at the 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) limit scientists say can prevent the worst consequences.
"Paris must mark a decisive turning point," he said. "We need to go much faster, much further if we are to limit the global temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius." -
