Residents of central Paris got a chilling reminder on Thursday of the challenge facing negotiators at the world climate summit on the city's outskirts: 80 tonnes of Greenland ice left to slowly melt on the cobbles in front of the Pantheon. The ice was scooped from a Greenland fjord and hauled to Paris as part of an installation by the visual artist Olafur Eliasson, best known for building waterfalls in New York City in 2008 and an artificial sky inside the Tate Modern gallery in London in 2003."I hope (this) work of art can actually bridge the gap between the data, the scientists, the politicians and heads of state and how normal people feel," Eliasson said on Thursday of the installation, dubbed Ice Watch. A U.N. deal on climate change in Paris should fire the starting gun for a global push on sustainable development in 2016, with no time to lose in shifting to greener, more resilient economies, the head of the U.N. development agency said.Together with an international accord on reducing disaster risk in March and September's adoption of 17 new global goals, a comprehensive agenda will be in place for tackling global warming and eradicating poverty, said Helen Clark, administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)."This an opportunity not to be missed," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in an interview from New York. "The direction is very, very clear." G20 sets up task force on climate change company disclosures
A G20 task force will develop voluntary company disclosures for investors to compare risks to businesses from climate change, Financial Stability Board Chairman Mark Carney said on Friday. The FSB drafts and coordinates global financial regulation for the Group of 20 economies (G20), whose summit in Turkey last month asked the board to look at how the financial sector can take account of climate-related issues."Access to high quality financial information will allow market participants and policymakers to understand and better manage those risks, which are likely to grow with time," Carney said in a statement at the Paris climate conference on Friday.
In September, Carney, who is also governor of the Bank of England, said companies must be more open about their "climate change footprint" such as risks from rapid repricing assets like coal and other fossil-fuel reserves.

Poring over a Bangladeshi flood map as a London financial analyst 12 years ago, Mark Campanale had no idea the moment would spawn a financial concept powerful enough to rivet central bankers, anger oil moguls and fuel a grassroots movement to get investors to dump their fossil fuel holdings.Campanale's eureka moment has grown into a powerful - and vigorously contested - theory: that energy investors are sitting on a $2 trillion "carbon bubble" because vast amounts of coal, oil and gas companies' reserves will never be extracted if the world is to limit itself to a rise in global temperatures of 2 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels. Once in a while at the global climate talks in Paris, the sea of mostly dark business attire is broken up by flashes of orange, yellow and red feathers from the spectacular headdress of Brazilian campaigner Jose de Lima Kaxinawa.De Lima Kaxinawa belongs to the Kaxinawa, also known as the Huni Kuin, a tribe that lives in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil and Peru and whose way of life is under threat from deforestation. He is also one of hundreds of Brazilian "party overflow members" at the climate talks, by far the biggest number of any country. Party overflow members wear purple stickers showing they can be asked to leave meetings if there is no space. Developed nations have mobilized some $80-$90 billion per year to help the poorest survive a warmer world, delegates at Paris climate talks said, but emerging countries dispute the figures and say a goal of $100 billion by 2020 is far from reach. The issue is central to U.N. talks in Paris, where nearly 200 nations are trying to forge a new pact on climate change. In October, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which represents rich nations, calculated that financial pledges from the developed world totaled $62 billion in 2014 towards an agreed U.N. goal to reach $100 billion by 2020.Since that report, new promises of funding have been made, including from Britain, France, Germany and Japan, the delegates said. The Vermont senator's plan envisions 10 million new jobs in clean energy such as wind, solar and geothermal power. It would ban oil and gas lobbyists from working in the White House, end new fossil fuel lease sales on public lands, and would cut carbon emissions faster in coming decades than the goals set in President Barack Obama's clean power plan.
