Torrential rains to continue in flood-hit Indian state
Torrential rains that have caused heavy flooding in Tamil Nadu state in southern India will continue for the next three days, the national weather office said on Wednesday.
"There will be no respite," said Laxman Singh Rathore, director general of meteorology at the India Meteorological Department.
The heaviest rainfall in over a century has caused massive flooding across Tamil Nadu, driving thousands from their homes, shutting auto factories and paralysing the airport in the state capital Chennai. -
Exxon taps high-profile lawyer to fight N.Y. climate change probe
ReutersExxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) has hired a star attorney in an aggressive response to mounting scrutiny over the company's climate change disclosures, according to people familiar with the matter. -
Former energy and climate advisor to President Obama, Michelle Patron explains in her Reuters column what a climate deal means for oil markets:
The most immediate market impact is in the power sector where a strong agreement will extend and accelerate the shift from coal to alternative power sources including renewables, nuclear and in some cases natural gas.The International Energy Agency estimates that renewable energy will become the largest single power source by 2040 and the share of coal will decline from 41 to 31 percent. This trend is already underway.
Last year, more new power plants were built that produce electricity from renewable sources than from all fossil fuel sources combined. As a result, green technology stocks will likely get a boost from Paris.
The impact on oil markets is more nuanced and depends on the pace at which governments ratchet up policies to constrain oil demand and limit the environmental impacts of production."

What's the elephant in the room at the Paris climate talks?Heads of state and big-name billionaires opened the Paris climate summit with a bang on Monday, promising billions of dollars to develop new green technology to solve a key sticking point of the negotiations: financing a low-carbon future for developing nations like India.
Yet campaigners and experts warned that it will be hard to deploy any new technologies quickly in places where they are needed most unless negotiators at the two-week U.N. talks can work out a deal on how rich countries will help finance this.
“I think the elephant in the room is still finance,” said Yvo de Boer, former head of the U.N. climate change secretariat.

BRIEF-Over 500 institutions commit to fossil fuel divestmentNineteen French cities and the French Parliament will announce a commitment to divest from fossil fuels on Wednesday, joining more than 500 instituions holding $3.4 trillion in assets. The number has jumped from 181 institutions representing $50 billion who agreed to remove investments in oil, gas or coal companies from their portfolios in 2014, according to environmental activist group 350.org and NGO Divest-Invest, which have coordinated the global divestment movement."Wednesday's announcement is another sign in the early days of the Paris Climate Summit that investors are reading the writing on the wall and dramatically shifting capital away from fossil fuels and towards clean, renewable energy," the groups said in a press release.Other recent divestment announcements include Dutch pension fund PFZW, which committed to divest from coal companies and reduce its investments in other fossil fuel companies and European insurance company Allianz, which divested 630 million of its own capital investment portfolio from coal.
