Sigh. Less than three hours and still more rumors that are all sound and fury signifying nothing. #taletoldbyanidiotby Michael Gartenberg via twitter 10/4/2011 2:39:30 PM -
It's apple iPhone day, and I've arrived at 1 infinite loop an hour early - things still relatively low-key right now. Not too many cars, etcby AlexeiReuters via twitter 10/4/2011 3:07:05 PM -

For something as high-profile as an iPhone launch, the size of the crowd so far is surprisingly small. No more than 20 people in line.by AlexeiReuters via twitter 10/4/2011 3:28:23 PM -
Very different vibe than past Apple events in San Francisco, where the line stretched around the block, a good hour before check-inby AlexeiReuters via twitter 10/4/2011 3:30:45 PM -
Wonder if Apple has kept attendance at this event much more limited than prior, off-campus launch events.by AlexeiReuters via twitter 10/4/2011 3:32:11 PM -
Sun has poked thru the clouds at Apples's Cupertino campus, and media check-in has just beganby AlexeiReuters via twitter 10/4/2011 4:01:07 PM -
Those people hoping for a live video stream from Apple's iPhone event today in Cupertino will be disappointed to know it's not going to happen. Blog 9to5mac confirmed with Apple's PR people that the company won't be providing a webcast of the launch. Apple didn't give a reason why it's decided to keep the event offline this time. 9to5mac.com -

Amazing how low-key this on-campus iPhone launch feels, none of that carnival-like atmosphere of launches at San Francisco venuesby AlexeiReuters via twitter 10/4/2011 4:08:50 PM -

Probably about 50 folks in the media check-in line, by my count. That's really small for an Apple launch event.by AlexeiReuters via twitter 10/4/2011 4:11:30 PM -
There's also a "guest" check-in booth, next to media check-in, but not too many people seem to be checking in to that one.by AlexeiReuters via twitter 10/4/2011 4:12:31 PM -
Sprint had to agree to some pretty steep terms with Apple in order to secure a deal to sell the iPhone, according to the Wall Street Journal. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal reports that the third-largest wireless carrier has agreed to buy at least 30.5 million iPhones, which means the company would probably be losing money under the agreement until about 2014. online.wsj.com
Sprint shares fell as much as 17 percent on Tuesday on news of the costs. www.reuters.com -

To follow up on Anthony's comment below on rumors of a voice recognition system, here's a bit of background. Last April, Apple bought a startup called Siri that lets people use their mobile phones to complete daily tasks using voice-powered technology. In short, to turn them into digital personal assistants. So far we've seen nothing from Apple making use of this technology, but today could be the day. If the Apple-watchers at 9to5mac.com are right, Apple could use today's iPhone product launch to pitch Assistant, an app that integrates Siri's technology into the company's iOS software. 9to5mac.com -

What the Apple store is down? #nowayby Michael Gartenberg via twitter 10/4/2011 4:29:27 PM -
People are really pining for a bigger screen and 4G wireless service on the new iPhone, according to a poll of nearly 11,000 Mashable readers. More than 2,200 of the respondents indicated they'd want high-speed mobile broadband, even though such capabilities would prove a drain on the device's battery. A bigger screen, which would also be a drain on battery life, garnered 2,600 votes. A thinner body and 8-megapixel camera were other popular choices. mashable.com

Question: why did apple close its online store before the event?
Anthony De Rosa : They do this before every one of these events to prepare the store for the new product they're about to unveil. Also sort of a courtesy, I would imagine, since you'd be pretty upset if you purchased an iPhone 4 today only to find out an iPhone 5 was released minutes ago. -
A Reuters staffer points out that this page www.apple.com actually lists the 4S on the page. -

More evidence it'll be an iPhone 4S, not an iPhone 5? Blog iPhone5release.org ran a post yesterday showing the specs from the new beta release of iTunes, which lists both a black and white iPhone 4S in its product description. iphone5release.org This all begs the question: Does it really matter what the new iPhone is called? Consumers will want one either way, right? -
