Apple expected to unveil applications to take on Google
When Apple Inc kicks off its annual conference for software developers on Monday, all the power players in the Apple universe will be on hand, save the one that is in many ways driving the agenda: Google Inc.
More than ever, the consumer electronics juggernaut finds itself in a pitched battle with the online search giant - in smartphones, cloud computing and the never-ending competition for the hearts and minds of the best software developers.
Apple on Monday is expected to announce its own mapping application, challenging the position of Google Maps as one of the most-valued features on the iPhone. It will unveil closer integration of its iPhone apps and iCloud storage service with all its devices, the latest riposte in its battle with Google's Android smartphone software.

A 'brief' timeline of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference:
- First conference was held in 1983 in Monterey, California. Future conferences would be held in San Jose, California and San Francisco's Moscone Center.
- 1996: Project 'Copland' discussed. Copland was supposed to become Mac OS 8, but the project was scrapped, and Apple decided to buy NeXT, which led Apple to develop Mac OS X.
- 1997: No new hardware or software. Instead, Steve Jobs spoke about Apple's ethos and took questions from the crowd.
- 1998: Interim CEO Jobs discussed technical issues relating to Mac OS. Quartz and Carbon are previewed.
- 1999: Jobs unveiled the 5.9 lb PowerBook, giving away laptops to some of the developers in attendance. Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X are teased.
- 2000: Microsoft Office 2000 is previewed. The email client Entourage is introduced for the first time. New hardware, including a new optical mouse and iMac desktops, are introduced.
- 2001: Jobs delivers an update on Mac OS X, which had been released a few months prior to the conference.
- 2002: A 'mock funeral' is held for versions of the Macintosh operating system preceeding Mac OS X. Mac OS 10.2, QuickTime 6 and 'Bonjour,' then known as 'Rendezvous,' are announced. 'Come for the Java, Stay for the Cocoa' is what the banners read.
- 2003: The PowerMac G5 is announced and a preview of Mac OS X Panther is shown. Apple's web browser Safari comes out of beta and the 'iLife' suite of applications (then called 'iApps') is released. Disney's 'Finding Nemo' is screened at the conference, and Apple handed out iSight cameras to those in attendance. Jobs announces the creation of Apple retail stores in California, New York and Japan.
- 2004: Mac OS X Tiger is previewed. Podcast support in iTunes is demoed, and Jobs unveils the first-ever Apple Cinema Displays.
- 2005: Macintosh computers change forever with the introduction of the Intel chips. Mac OS X Leopard is announced. Jobs releases 'impressive' numbers for iPod and Mac sales.
- 2006: Mac OS X Leopard is discussed, and the feature 'Time Machine' is introduced. The Mac Pro replaces the Power Mac G5.
- 2007: The conference opens with a 'Mac vs. PC' ad that pokes fun at the failure of Windows Vista and the Zune. Jobs reveals the release date for the much-anticipated iPhone. Apple's Safari internet browser for Windows is announced.
- 2008: iPhone's 2.0 operating system revealed. The App Store is announced, as is the new iPhone 3G. Mac OS X Snow Leopard is previewed. Apple's .Mac service is relaunched as 'MobileMe.'
- 2009: Phil Schiller steps in for Jobs, who is absent due to medical reasons. The Macbook Pro and Macbook Air line of computers are refreshed with some upgrades. The iPhone 3G[S] is announced. Apple's iOS 3 brings multimedia text messaging and copy/paste to the iPhone.
- 2010: Gizmodo leaks the iPhone 4 before the event. The Retina display is introduced. FaceTime and iMovie come to the iPhone. Tickets for the developer's conference sell out in eight days.
- 2011: Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5 and iCloud are introduced in what would become Jobs' last keynote speech before his death later in the year. iTunes Match is announced as a $24.99 cloud-based music service.

Possible things we'll see from today's WWDC keynote: iOS 6 released, Mac refreshes, Siri coming to iPad, Apple TV SDK.
With the exception of the iOS 6 expectation, which has already pretty much been confirmed through signage at the event, the rest are rumors that have been floating around on tech blogs over the past several weeks.
Wouldn't be surprising if we hear something about Steve Jobs as well during the keynote, as last year's WWDC keynote was his final public appearance as CEO of Apple. -
